Work on the 70th Eurovision Song Contest is starting now

In December 2025, the first important details about the international jubilee edition were announced. Eurovision have place in every spring, and this year’s contest will take place in May 2026, with the final scheduled for May 16 in Vienna.

As a member of the «Big Five» Spain automatically has a guaranteed spot in the final. Austria, as the host country, also has a guaranteed place. However, despite this, the Spanish broadcaster RTVE’s Board of Directors, led by president José Pablo López, decided in September 2025 to resign from the contest. This will be the first time when Spain will not participate in the Eurovision Song Contest.

The decision by the Spanish authorities and public broadcaster is a protest against Israel’s participation in the event. Similarly, Ireland, the Netherlands, and Slovenia have also withdrawn from this year’s contest for the same reason. These countries oppose Israel’s involvement, citing political controversies related to its international policies. The criticism mainly focuses on Israel’s actions in the Middle East and reports of human rights problems. Their protest expresses solidarity with the Palestinians and opposition to Israeli policies.

For Poland, the 70th edition will mark its 29th participation in the contest. The Polish public broadcaster TVP has acknowledged the tensions surrounding Israel’s involvement but has confirmed Poland’s participation. Opinions within the political scene remain divided. Poland on February 14, announced the artist which would like to represent the country during the competitions. One artist which will represent Poland during competitions will be chosen on 7 march.

The Eurovision organizers, the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), make it clear that the contest is not political and is the center of music and culture. The main goal of the event is to promote unity and diversity through art. At this time, the full list of participating countries has not yet been announced.
