One holiday, two traditions. How Poles and Spaniards Celebrate the Last Thursday before Lent
Most Poles and Spaniards are Cristians and because of that they cellebrate the simmilar holidays. But that doesn’t means that they have the same traditions. Tommorow is the last Thursday before Easter, which is the most important of Cristians holidays. In Spain this day is called Jueves lardero in Poland Tłusty czwartek. Both of those holidays means the same- Fat Thursday, but they are cellebrated diferently.
In Spain the tradition of Jueves lardero resemblance more the holiday ad medieval times where people would eat a lot of meat before it was forbbiden for 40 days. Spaniards have a picnic, they eat savory greasy food which depends on the region that it’s celabreted. In Catalonia traditonal food is Botifarra d’Ou in Soria people eat chorizzo. Today in Spain this holiday is mostly celabrated by young people that gather around to eat, drink and party.
Polish way of celabrating Tłusty Czwartek it’s way different than in Spain. Poles are known for eating sweet baked goods that are known locally. They look simmilar to donuts, other are called angel wings. This holiday is taken seriously because everyone stands in line at the bakery for hours just to get the best sweets. It’s also a saying that if you won’t eat any donut in this day, you’re gonna have a bad year. That’s why everyone boast about how many of baking goods they ate.
Even though those two countries are thousands of kilometers apart from eachother people like to cellabrate the same holiday. And even though there are some differences both sides like to spend this day eating good food with their loved ones.
